Except for one little shower Friday night after we went to bed, there was no bad weather at all! In fact Saturday morning started out overcast and comfortable! The lake was in good shape, with pretty water visibility to about 3' and water temps around 83 to 84 degrees. We had 12 members actually show up to fish for a total of 9 boats. After a lengthy wait for some safe daylight we got it started, we made good use of the down time to drift around out by the no-wake zone and chat with one another so no one complained.
When it was all over this is how it turned out:
Robbie Holmes had us on the edge of our seats when he pulled that monster out of the bag, we just knew (and hoped for Robbie) he had the Calcutta. On first weigh with the scales in the wind that fish weighed 6.80 lbs. Someone said to re-zero the scales and weigh again, we did and it weighed 6.71lbs the second time. So we marked it at that weight. He reported catching his fish on the Zoom Trick Worm in Green Pumpkin, Texas rigged. Robbie went on the win Big Bass and first place with a total weight of 10.53lbs. $130 for 1st and $65 for Big Bass.
I had second place with 5 fish for 7.92lbs. I have to tip my hat to Stan Knowles for screwing my head on for me. We talked to Stan about midday and he told me that he had caught most of his fish on the white pearl super fluke (weightless). I told him I had thrown it some that morning with no results. He told me how he was fishing it, so I decided to give it a bit more time. I am glad I did because it accounted for two of my largest fish afterwards. My other fish came on Giggy head with watermelon Candy finesse worms and C-rigged Zoom Centepede in watermelon candy. My winnings were $78.
Stan Knowles completed the top three with three fish for 7.44lbs and $52. Stan reported catching the biggest bass on a black Buzzbait before the same came up all the way. He said the other two keepers came on the White pearl Super Fluke after wading through a bunch of short fish.
Our final event of the season is next month on lake Weiss. We will be fishing out of the Weiss Mart Boat Ramp on Hwy 9 in Cedar Bluff, Al. Hopefully, the fish will be on an all out feeding binge and we'll see some of our best weights of the year! Looking forward to seeing everyone over there!
Here's that 6.71lb fish that Robbie caught!
