Sounds like the problem was already starting, I don't think one run would have caused that problem, I've run mine 25 miles or more 5000 to 5200 rpms in one run and never had that happen so far. I'm glad it wasn't really bad!! that could have been Big bucks repair.

I agree, could've been the previous owner or a flaw in the hub. That one run would not have done that. I carry my prop wrench and a spare hub in my boat.

Glad to read that it is an inexpensive fix!

Glad they got you pointed in the right direction. As soon as I read it, I was going to say hub also. I think it's the Mercury props (Tempest, Trophy, Fury) that have the flo-torque hubs, which are the easy ones to fix. I think the Yamaha props are pressed in hubs and can be a bit of a pain. That is why I run the Mercury props, plus they just run better on my boat.

I use to blow through hubs like crazy. As soon as I hit 75, it would take about 45 seconds and it would let go every time. After going through a bunch of hubs, I finally talked to a mechanic friend of mine, and he said the lower unit on my boat has a passage that needed to be drilled out just a little wider to allow for more water to flow through the hub and keep it a few degrees cooler. He widened the hole for me, and no more problems. But, I've also managed to do a number on my prop, so I haven't seen 75 in about a year, so I'm just going on his word it's fixed...haha

I run the Trophy (Mercury) on mine, so Chris' observation is probably more accurate, not sure about Evinrude props.

I have read about the E-TECS burning up hubs and there being a simple fix. but I have not yet been able to figure out the fix. I sure would love to know before I put everything back together tonight. I can't say enough about Bay Marine in Kennesaw if you work on your own stuff and just need parts they are a great place to go. They had everything I needed in stock and helped me out on the price a little. Bob we should look into a Shop that would like to sponsor the club by offering a club discount. I bet they would be willing to do it. I don't know just a thought.

You might want to check out this thread on THT: http://www.thehulltruth.com/boating-forum/118485-evinrude-etec-blowing-prop-hubs.html

Some good info in there about it, depending on the year of your motor.

Mine is an 08 looks like that problem is with 2006 and older. I guess if it does it again real soon I will look more into it. I bought 2 new hub bushings. so I should be ok. for a while.

Shoot, I will take a $100 repair any day of the week plus now I have a new impeller, all fresh seals and fresh gear oil in the foot. If I get home early enough tonight I am going to take it out to test it.

Let me hit my head, err knock on wood as I have not had any problem with my E Tec.
I have made several runs at Guntersville from Mud Creek to Roseberry and back at 5200 RPMs and no problem..... yet
My first thought was a blown hub as the info you stated was like what happened to me many years ago on Chickamauga.
I did learn that at idle speed, you could put it in gear and slowly return to launch site.
Any RPM faster than that would spin the hub and not move.
Glad it was not the lower unit.

Me too!!! Got it all back together headed to the lake to test now.

Edit

The boat ran flawless and the fish were biting too! They were killing my crankbait before dark and nailing a spinnerbait after the sun set. I wish I would have had more than two hours to fish I never want to leave them biting.
