I have been doing research on bigger boats for 'down the road'. I think these 2 models are my top 2 so far for my next 'future' boat.

What is your opinions between Stratos 201 Pro XL vs Ranger 520vx?

225hp vs 250hp? (It can be Mercury, Yamaha, or Evinrude)

Yes I know there are tons of other model boats just as good if not better. I know answers can be biased but I still like hearing what y'all have to say.

Thanks for your time smile

To be honest, you'll probably get mostly biased feedback on this topic. It will be like a Ford vs. Chevy debate, so I'll save my Ranger sales pitch for smack talk some other time. The best thing to do to make a decision is ride in them both and take a hard look at how they handle storage and fishability. There may be things that excite you more about certain features than others. Only you can decide what fits your needs the best. That was a nice side effect of riding as a marshal in the Elite tourneys. You really get to see how a boat rides at top speed and how it handles a tourney load of gear. Also the pros are more than happy to share the good and bad about the boat they run.

Let's see I got one of those boats.
I would go for the Ranger they may be the best riding boats out there.

Thanks Andy. I really do appreciate the information. I have personally rode in a 2006 Stratos 201 Pro XL with a 225 Mercury Optimax. With a full tournament load and 2 people it was running 73mph. I was amazed how smooth of a ride it was.
But I have not rode in a Ranger yet.

What is it like being a Marshall? How much is it to be a Marshall?

If that's the only two, I go with the Ranger!! You need to ride in a Ranger, before you buy one. Both will have their own pro's and con's. Just don't look at outer parts look in lower deck compartments how things are layed out and access to get to it, if you need to repair or replace later.

Yes it is true. I should actually ride both before choosing one or the other.
These are great boats and I chose these 2 to talk about because they both seem to have similar specifications.
These are not the only 2 brands as possible 'future' boat choices. Skeeter, phoenix, Ranger, Stratos, and Nitro are all possible choices. Depending on when I am wishing to upgrade is basically what I can afford. Buying a Stratos seems to be pretty affordable compared to ranger prices.

You must be a BASS member first. This year it was $125 and prizes (swag) vary by BASS sponsors at the time and event. So far I have ridden with nice guys (and they mostly are). My experience has been on a lake I know so it is interesting contrasting your knowlege with a pro to determine how different you fish the same body of water. I haven't done it on an unknown lake yet but plan to next year. To be honest those guys aren't a whole lot different than us when fishing a tourney. The big difference aside from sponsors is the mental fortitude and stamina they possess. Spend a week truly following the work those guys put into their job and it gives you a real appreciation of it being called a sport.

Thanks Andy.
That sounds pretty cool smile
It should be fun to possibly try that sometime. It sounds like a great learning experience.

Ranger, Triton, and Stratos are all now owned by a private equity firm and built in the Ranger plant in Ark. Has been this way for the past few years. Each is a good boat with both negative and positives...Andy gave some very good advice.

I've had two Tritons...a TR196 and a 19X2...and liked both...the X2 had a much better ride than the TR196.

I traded the the X2 for a Skeeter ZX 20 and love all of the storage and the big front deck...the ride is also good.

Have fun looking....Boating Atlanta is a good place to look for new or used boats as they always seem to have a good variety to choose from...and will work with you if you want to trade your current boat.

Thanks for the information Tom smile
I guess choosing my next boat can get just as overwhelming as choosing the type of lures to use to fish. I just have to take one step at a time. I can't really afford much more than my current boat (as of now but things could change down the road) but it's nice to get a good understanding on what I plan on doing for my next future boat.

I will say I am disappointed with the Stratos/Ranger customer service. I have been calling all day trying to get info on two factory parts I need and it immediately goes to eternal hold each time... so far I have called no bs 10 times and held from 3-5 minutes each time. I just need some dang parts!!!

I have to edit this and say that I do love my stratos boat though. For the money it is an awesome boat, Speed, handling, storage, stability and price point. I plan on having it paid off in a year and maybe upgrading to a bigger boat. I would like to have a 20' w/250 E-TEC or Yamaha. Only real reason is I like to go FAST! Shoot I may just keep this one and get a go fast family boat.

I wonder if Ranger parts are the same people? Every time I have called they are extemely helpful and quick. They talked me through a whole hub and break assembly and figured out the kit to save me the most $$$. Also, walked me through the work and I'm far from a mechanic.
