Craig - Yeah your boat looks pretty awesome and I bet it goes pretty good with the 150 etec. I would be more pleased with my boat but only having a 90hp it is preventing me from cover more water throughout the day. It's a great set up and I'm not complaining but I am starting to get ready for a bigger and faster boat. But until it's the right timing for me to upgrade, I have to make do with my boat and make smarter decisions on the few areas I choose to fish. I know I'm still capable of winning local tournaments with my Nitro and 90hp Mercury Optimax, I just have to sit down, do my homework and be the best prepared I can be and go fish my heart out for 8 hours smile

I will be the first to tell you that your boat does not catch the fish. You can get plenty of places with that 90. My last Stratos only had a 125 and it got me plenty of places. I still need some time setting up my boat but I have gotten it to run 63.5 with my full tournament load 1/2-3/4 tank of gas and just me in it. With two people a full livewell and same amount of gas 61 is the best I can get out of it. I need to bring the motor up some because I am only turning 5450 rpms and still have 22-25lbs of water pressure at wot. I really need to send the prop off to have it worked. My goal is 65-67 at 5850-6k rpms. I have heard of people turning this motor to 6250 but I am not sure I would want to. Oh and after almost 20min of holding for Ranger parts they picked up and the lady was super nice and helpful.

Ok nice. Yeah my boat would easily be around those speeds if I had a 150 on the back.
I'm guessing 44-45 MPH with a 22 pitch laser 2 prop at 5500 ramps sounds about right for my 90hp Mercury Optimax??
That speed was by myself, normal tournament load and full tank of gas. (31 gallon tank) and before I started to fill the Livewell.

Boat Specs:
Length: 17'9"
Width: 7'2"
Dry weight: 1350lbs
Max hp: 150

That sounds fine. Do you have a jack plate? If not I bet you could add a 6" plate and bring that motor up some + a 23 or 24 pitch prop and get that thing moving really well. I would bet there is probably 5+/- mph to be gained for not much money. I have a 6" jack plate now but I am thinking about going with a 10" plate.

edit: I just saw that your boat is rated for a 150? Before you upgrade your whole boat I would sell that 90 and put a 150 on it. I bet you would be surprised at how much better you like the boat. I bet it would be a 65+mph boat.

No I don't have a jack plate. I do understand it will help. I just have to choose if it is worth putting all that extra $$$$ in this boat when I would spend about that same upgrading to a bigger boat and bigger motor (for a used boat).
Money adds up fast.

Mercury Optimax Pro XS 150hp new or used (low hours)
+
6" jack plate
+
Hot-foot throttle
+
New Aftermarket prop
+
Labour / install fees

The price I would be able to sell my 2006 Mercury Optimax 90hp (120 hrs of use)

Total: ????

It's a pretty tough decision...

Put a few thousand more dollars in this boat or just save that for when I find a good buy on a 20 footer with a 225hp or 250hp??

True, you could save a ton of money installing everything yourself though. It is very easy work.

Frank, I have a Z6 with a 135 Mercury Optimax and it will run around 56 with a full tank, and one person. It has the standard Merc. prop and does not have a jack plate. I don't see the model number on you Allatoona Bass post, is yours the Z6? Does it list to starboard just as it start to plane? Mine does and not sure how to fix the issue.

My Boat is a 2006 Nitro 482 with a 90hp Mercury Optimax.
This was the last year model of these before they started the Z-series. My actual length is 17'9". Z-6 is 17'6" and the Z-7 is 18'6". I know the 150hp would push my boat 65 plus MPH if I adjust everything properly. That would be plenty of speed it's just if I am going to spend thousands of dollars I might as well upgrade boat and motor.. I just have some thinking to do.

Yes, I think when they went from the 482 to Z6 they DE-rated the HP from 150 to 135. Still not sure why the boat leans just before you get up on plane, and I have seen a lot of comments on forums about the issue.

Yeah, mine leans until you plane out and trim the motor up some then it flattens out and then is a very smooth ride. I think it is just from the boat design.

Cliff and Frank, I can think of only a couple of things that would cause the boat to "lean" to the starboard on the hole shot. One is the motor may need a torque compensator on the skeg or readjust your torque tab to the opposite that it may be now (remember that once you are on plane the tab is usually out of the water anyway). The other thing is the planning hook on the hull, located on the first stage strake on the bottom of the hull. You can feel the hull turn downward right at the back of the strake, if the earlier and new versions do the same thing then the odds are that they use the same mold both new and old. Any flaw in the old mold will manifest itself in the new models as well.
Solution, might be to counterbalance the load in the boat, or just live with it (keep both hands on the steering wheel!).

For sure keep both hands on the wheel, pulls kind of hard.

I learned to live with it. It is just the last couple seconds before planing out when it try's to turn to the right. You just trim up some and then it is as smooth of a ride as any other boat.

I could never figure out why you got rid of your Ranger. You had a nice boat.
