I fish from a yak frequently... love it!! There are a few pit falls. As pointed out, you are sitting. This can get you into odd positions when fighting fish. Also, it takes a bit to get used to being so close to the water.

Yaks are more stable than canoes...they roll with waves instead of tipping.

Def give it a shot. It is a very relaxing way to get out on the water.

I know there are some guys who fish Lake Murray in SC that have their kayaks all rigged up for fishing. They aren't paddlers though. So consider learning to paddle first, then make the decision about doing some serious fishing out of one.
The larger the boat the more stable. Pungo's are very stable kayaks. That's what I learned in. Only fished out of a kayak once--in a pond-it was fun and you could get into places you couldn't in a motor boat-that's one advantage.

Welcome to the GFF and thanks for bringing another level of fishing to the boards. Hopefully, you will continue sharing your knowledge of kayaking with us and bring more of the kayak crowd into our forum!

Hey everybody. I just moved to the Augusta area back in October. Did a little freshwater kayak fishing in California and a lot of saltwater kayak fishing in Pensacola, FL. Definitely looking forward to getting the kayak out here on the Strom Thurmond Reservior and going for something. Been out on a friend's boat a few times and fishing has been really hard despite our combined knowledge, haha, but I've always had better luck on the kayak. Anyway, if anybody else in the Augusta area is interested in getting out as soon as it warms up, let me know. Also looking forward to getting out towards the coast when the warmer weather arrives to get back in the saltwater.

Welcome to the GFF, and I hope you can bring some of the lurkers out in the Kayak and Canoe Section. Hopefully, you will get the information you need and perhaps get some dialogue going in this much overlooked section!
